Ventura Water to launch incentive program Summer 2015
40 to 60% of average monthly water use in Ventura is used outdoor, and nearly half of that is wasted due to inefficient watering methods and faulty irrigation systems. It’s been proven however, that upgrading an outdoor irrigation system can help to save as much as 30% of the water from conventional systems.
With those figures in mind, on March 9, 2015, Ventura’s City Council approved Ventura Water’s Water Wise Incentive Plan. The program, which launched July 1, will help customers offset costs for changing out their traditional green for more appropriate, water wise gardens and more efficient irrigation systems.
“We hope this program will help to motivate customers,” said Jill Santos, City of Ventura Environmental Specialist. “Even if a property owner has already switched out their landscaping, they still may qualify for other incentives, like rainwater harvesting or a weather-based irrigation timer.”
City residents are encouraged visit: cityofventura.net/waterwise, for more information and to apply for the incentives. Applicants will be considered on a first come, first serve basis.
“Any one who is a Ventura Water customer with an account with the City can apply. Afterwards, staff will verify the property’s square footage, existing irrigation system and landscape type.”
Projects will have 120 days to complete their project. Depending upon the size of their lawn, applicants will be eligible to receive up to $1600. An additional $300 may also be available to upgrade a homeowner’s current irrigation converting it to a drip irrigation system, or remove in entirely to install rainwater harvesting equipment.
“Unfortunately, projects already completed cannot be retroactively reimbursed,” said Santos. “However, projects that have already been started and are not completed may still qualify for other incentives. No rebates will be issued until all of the documentation has been received. To apply visit: cityofventura.net/waterwise/incentiveprogram
